TRANSGENDER ESTATE PLANNING

It’s a topic that hasn’t gotten a lot of attention, at least not yet. Transgender estate planning. But uniform legal documentation has become an increasingly important issue for the transgender and intersex communities. Estate planning attorney Rebecca Doane says she recently had an intersex client, who’s loved ones had to deal with estate issues, after her client died, because the names on the birth certificate and death certificate, didn’t match up!

“On the birth certificate the name was George, and he was a male but when she died, she was Georgianna and the death certificate had female on it, it’s very difficult to go back after death and correct the birth certificate.”

Rebecca Doane encourages anyone who is intersex or going through gender reassignment to be sure all legal documents are consistent. It will save time and heartache for loved ones left behind.
